Newly completed graphite and colored pencil self portrait---
October 23, 2017
New collage in progress---
October 23, 2017 Lots of work done since last check-in, both collages and drawings. here they are----
February 20, 2017 The large Abbe collage is on hold while I work on some smaller projects. Here is a humorous pencil and colored pencil self portrait, about 17x20 inches that I completed.
November 27, 2016 Shades mostly blocked in. Now the color begins. I plan on being more dramatic with this one-and all that follow!
September 4, 2016 Here are the dark areas roughed in on the canvas.
July 29, 2016 Next project-60 inch square close up portrait. Here is my pencil sketch.
July 29, 2016 All done!
May 22 Lots of progress. The challenge is treatment of the left upper background.
April 6, 2016 Off to a start. Getting the nose right and deciding if the face shadow values are too dark.
February 22, 2016
Here is a preliminary drawing I have made for my next collage. This will be on a square canvas, 30"x 30". possibly in a diamond format.
December 10, 2015 finished
November 27, 2015 nearing completion. Working on motion in the background then will return to finish the face and figure.
October 22, 2015 I just finished open studios in Nevada City, CA and did more work on my collage, especially on the background. See photo.
Sept 25, 2015 I am working on another collage of a girl blowing bubbles. See drawing and work in progress below.
Sept 25, 2015 Sorry for the long absence. I have created a collage of a women titled "Tracy" Both collage and drawings are below.
June 26, 2015 This work is finished and titled "History" I am now starting a small collage of Frida Kahlo for a Sacramento group show.
May 23, 2015 I have started on the people in the left of the composition.
May 14, 2015 I have done more work on the central portrait, especially on the hair and clothing. The 1st photo is a snapshot of the canvas with colored pencil added to anticipate how the finished work will look.
May 10, 2015 I have made a drawing of a couple to add to the other side of the composition. Here is the drawing and the enlargement, traced on the canvas. This is starting to show how the finished collage will look.
April 28, 2015 I am starting my new collage called "Medicine for all". It will have a Lakota medicine man and the Mona Lisa with some viewers. Below is the general plan and some prep sketches.
April 28 "Humbug is done.
April 21, 2014 This work is nearing completion. Working with shreds that show strait hair and using this to represent strait hair in the collage is a challenge. Not the 2 heads with blonde hair. More work on the front faces. Too bad they are both looking exactly the same way. I will do something to get some variation between them.
March 29, 2015 I am back to working my ongoing large work "Humbug" It is my intent to finish this soon and get it into my May show at the Flour Garden in Grass Valley, CA
February 6, 2014 Here is progress on my latest collage as well as a shot from my teaching at Ben Franklin Crafts, Grass valley, CA
December 15, 2014 More work on the hair. I decided to add the classic pose in they eyes.
August 6, 2014 Here is the start of my next project-titled "Vanishing Musician" This is the portrait I sketched for what will be an organist sitting at a tracker pipe organ.
August 3, 2014 Here is a work that I completed for a show at the Center for the Arts in Grass Valley, CA which is to feature a Nevada County CA building. Mine, here, is the Center for the Arts building itself. The show will be up for the whole month.
July 14, 2014 Here is a shot of the reception at the Kennedy Gallery in Sacramento, CA where I have one work in a group show, themed, "Americana"
July 1, 2014 Finished. Compare with the last image. I am see that it could have been cropped at the top, left side and bottom to make a more dramatic work, like this cropped photo.
June 25, 2014 Much of the background is done. This is a delicate balance between getting a convincing background and preserving negative space.
June 18,2014 I have some of the horse done. The shadows on the front leg look OK. The horse head needs work.
June 6, 2014 Here, I have much of both kids done. getting the required contrast between the boy and the pole requires care.
May 29, 2014, I have some of the girl's face done.
May 26th 2014 Here is my next project, a 24"x 40" of children on a carousel horse.
This is the sketch and its layout on the canvas.
May 26th 2014 I completed this modest collage of roses.
April 29, 2014 Finished and ready for the Flour Garden Grass Valley show, then the SMUD show.
April 14,2014 I have redone the bottom of the face due to negative space errors. It is approaching a likeness better now. Still-lots of room for improvement, such as the left side of the lower jaw.
April 8, 2014
Here is the beginning of my next project, a project that I was invited to submit at an art show at SMUD, the Sacramento Utility District. The work must be on a solar panel (provided by SMUD) with some of the panel showing. I am creating a portrait of the CEO of SMUD on the panel. Here is my pencil drawing of him as the design for the collage.
I am now putting the finishing touches on this work.
March 23,2014 Here is a beginning of the improvements on Miriam's eyes and nose.
I may need to go a little rounder with the eyes. This is my first baby portrait!
March 19,2014 Here I have started to improve Miriam's eyes as per request from the person who commissioned the work. They are wide but a little too long which is easy to correct. No one knows a girls eyes like her grandmother! they need more work and will tend to have an astonished, rather than smiling look if too wide. There is also touch up on Ben and Rachel's necks and other details. Finally the fun part of creating the background to reflect the interests and personalities of the family.
March 17, 2014 More progress-suggested improvements on Miriam's hair and nose. I need to finish Miriam's hands, Isabel's hand, then its details from there.
March 10, 2014 Here, I am improving Isabel's hair to make it more accurate, then I will correct Mirriam's nose and eyes a little more.
March 4, 2014 Miriam's top is done. Now I am working on Ben's arm, Rachel's top, and details on all four figures.
February 22, 2014 Here, I am getting Ben's shirt finished as well as his neck. I am still working on fine tuning Isabel's face, starting with the right brow.
February 20,2014 I m redoing Isabel's eyes. It looks like they are open too wide right now. I am working on the clothing and hands for all of the figures.
February 14 Isabel's eyes are not right, I am going to redo them. Her mouth may need some fine tuning too. I am stating to work on Ben's shirt and arm.
February 13, 2014
Improving Isabel, still more details to iron out.
February 6, 2014
Some analysis shows up the defects "in progress" With a sharpie, I drew in the corrections on a printout of a jpeg of the work. The eyes need to be bigger and the chin needs to be shallower.
February 5, 2014 More progress on Isabel. The eyes are still wrong, though she looks "age progressed" and the customer could make the final call here-----
February 4, 2014 I have gotten a start on Isabel's face. A likeness is not there yet in this early stage, typically.
February 3, 2014 A little more on Rachel. I am moving on to Isabel and will keep an eye out for improvement ideas for Rachel. Isabel's hair bow can be seen in the lower right, laid out with an sharpie.
February 3, 2014 Rachel is getting closer here-still glaring in the eyes.
February 1, 2014 Back hard at the family portrait. Here I am working on Rachel's face but have a long way to go before it is an acceptably likeness. I need to finish this face and start that of Miriam, and I will be on the home stretch.
January 2, 2014 I have created a small 8"x 10" collage of the Yuba River to fit the theme of the Wild and Scenic Film and Art show where it will be displayed, starting tomorrow. The scene is typical of the Yuba River, but made up.
December 31, 2013 I have taken time out from the Gaiser family portrait to create two works for an upcoming local group art show. One of these is the Jane Goodall collage below. Happy New Year!
December 17, 2013 More progress, alot of Rachel's face is done and am now working on her hair. Ben\'s face is mostly done. I obviously need to lower his shoulders as he looks like a football player here.
December 4, 2013 More work on the father, Ben's, face.
November 25, 2013 I made the youngest girl, Miriam's face better. You can see how I am correcting the anatomy of Ben, initially being drawn too small in the picture, except for his head.
November 23, 2013 I am redoing the face of Miriam, below, as early attempts are failing to capture her essence. See my page called "non-portrait collages to see two new works, Koi, and Mayfly.
November 17, 2013 More progress on the commissioned family group, especially on Miriam's face.
November 16, 2013 I have made 2 small 5"x7" collages for the Small Works show at the AsIf Studios in Grass Valley, which runs through January. Here is one of the works called "Koi"
November 12, 2013 Here, I have started the actual collage by using a grid to reproduce the sketches on the canvas with a sharpie. Not likenesses yet, they will be when I have all of the magazine shreds in place. I can see that Ben's shoulders need to be much wider.
November 7, 2013 here is a drawing of Miriam Gaiser, a replacement picture of Rachael Gaiser. I have the canvas laid out with a sharpie for the collage of the family.
November 3, 2013 My work is in the small works show at the ASIf in Grass valley CA. It will be there through November 9th. I have a rough drawing of Ben for the family group I am working on. See below. Also I am getting the faces placed in a composition to enable filling in the rest of the details.
October 29, 2013
My next project is a commission to depict a family of four on one canvas. Here is a preliminary sketch of the Mother and daughter.
October 11, 2013 This weekend and last, I am in the Nevada City Open Studios event hosted by the Grass Valley Center for the Arts. Here are some pictures from last weekend.
September 24 Last posting for this one as I am only finishing the smallest details now. My next commission is a family group with 2 adults and 2 children.
September 22, 2013
Nearing the end with this one, just details. Weather good or not, I am stuck with it.
September 19, 2013 More of the parrot blocked in. This has been a struggle but I am getting it. I hope anatomical errors won't detract from the effect.
September 18, 2013 Much of the fish is roughed in. A large parrot flying down to the left completes (I hope) the composition. See the parrot layout and closeup below.
September 12, 2013 The work continues, below, where I am making the water look more natural by adding wavelets in the form of small oval pieces of mostly white paper. I am also adding detail to the fish to make it look more 3 dimensional and natural.
September 10, 2013 More progress on the water. I am staring to block in the fish.
September 9, 2013 This (left) was made for the Iris show at the Grass valley CA Center for the arts and sold there. it is 5"x 7"
September 9, 2013 see progress below. I am starting the water, and will return to finish the figure.
August 30 Almost done with the figure. The right sholder and coat collor needs the shape and perspective corected. The difficult right hand needs work and details in the face will be completed as well as the shoes. I will begin the red tricycle next.
Hi Group-sorry for the long absence! I have been hard at work at one of my other occupations but am back at my commission with a vengeance. Here is progress with the central figure that I plan to have done tonight or tomorrow. I am working on the difficult right hand. Next I will start with the water and the imaginary man eating fish that awaits the man on the trike.
June 24, 2013 I have been distracted and away, but am working on this commision. Here is some progress on the face and suit of the full figure. I am using exagerated atmospheric perspective, in contrat to my earlier work.
April 14, 2013 I won 2nd place in the Pioneer Arts Grass Valley, in my catagory, today. The judge was an art professor from Sierra College. The previous collage, small reproduction pictured, was my entry.
April 14, 2013 I have been swamped but finaly started this 40"x30" collage. Just starting the face. I have a long ways to go! I am moving into full figures as my subjects.
March 25, 2013 Excuse my absence. I am back with a new commision. my strngest
work, a grown man on a business suit riding a kid's tricycle. Here is the drawing, ready to be transfered to a 30" by 40" canvis.
February 7, 2013 Finished and taken to the framers. The person who commisioned it should be pleased.
January 6, 2013 Progress on the background. I have a show in Starbucks on J St. in Sacramento, CA this month.
December 10, 2012 More work on the bacground and nearing completion. Getting the background right is proving to be the most chalenging psrt.
November 13, 2012 I had an opportunity to work some more on this. It looks as if I may get this done for the small works show in Nevada City where I already have 2 other works.
November 4,2012 I am working a little more on my art for the moment, having earned it with extra hard work on my school stuff. Here, I have added more to the flower in the hummingbird work.
October 10th 2012 I am swamped right now with my last few weeks of grad school, and probibly won't post any art activity for a bit. Graduation is on Dec 15th!
My art is at the Broad St. Bistro in Nevada City CA for this month.
September 14, 2012
I will be selling and showing my art at an outdoor art fair at the McClatchy Library from 8:30AM to 5PM between U and V Streets on 22nd Street in Sacramento CA. This will be on Sunday, September 16th, 2012.
September 13, 2012 I will be teaching my collage method at Recreate, a childrens' art center that features art creation from recycled materials. The class is targeted at adults.
September 1, 2012 Here is the start of my new project. A small nature work that features a hummingbird and some yellow flowers. I have it roughed out on canvas and the outline sketched with a sharpie. It will feature alot of red and green and be 8"x10" in size.
August 20, 2012 About done except for some minor details, too small to see in the photo. I decided to change the dress to red, added the small butterfly to the right, and will cover the whole work in clear acrylic. It is 30" x 40"
July 4, 2012 I presided over my "hands on collage making" again at the Annual July 4th Festival in River Park from 10-1 pm at Glenn Hall Park on Sandburg Drive at Carlson Drive, in Sacramento today. Like last year, I was swamped by talented budding artists! See the pictures below!
July 3, 2012 Face taking shape, almost have the lips right.
June 30, 2012 I have started to model the face. Alot of light violet is being used. This will be the dominent color of the work.
June 28, 2012 I have the girl now laied out on a 30x40 inch canvis and am ready to start with the papering. I am using a variety of beauty oriented magazines as a source for the paper.
June 12, 2012 Here is a sketch for my next collage. My version of the "girl blowing bubbles" subject.
June 12, 2012 Here is my latest commissioned work, a 16x24 inch collage of a Sacramento chef and caterer, commissioned by his mother as a birthday present and kept secret untill now. It is made from archival cooking magazine shreds.
June 7, 2012 Suprise project is finished and delivered. On June 12,2012, I will post a pivture of the finished work.
May 15 Final exam and a presentation this evening will end another semester of grad school. Next semester will feature one more class, called Automated Inspection, and completion of my thesis, and with luck, I will have a Masters Degree in mechanical Engineering by next December. I am seriously considering going on for a PhD. After today, I will make rapid progress on my "secret commision" collage.
May 13, 2012 A close up of the nose on my "secret commission". Noses are the most challenging feature inmty medium which is shape driven. Using shading to model features isn't possable. Still I get better every time.
May 10, 2012 Swamped with school work at the moment. If all goes just right, I will have my masters degree in mechanical engineering by next spring. More art posts shortly.
May 4, 2012 Here is a closeup of my "secret commision" I am working, here, on the right cheek.
April 27, 2012 I am showing my art at the Bravo Bach music festival, a two weekend group of concerts of Bach's and other baroque composers by leading performers. I am giving 20% of my sales to the venue's organizers.
April 8, 2012
Nice reception at my Granucci Gallery show.
Mim Meaken and Sandy Lindblad
314 West Main Street, Grass Valley, CA. It will be there until mid-month.
March 29, 2012 Finished, now on to acommisioned work. No postings of that project, in progress, will occur as it is a suprise for a recipiant. I will drop in sometimes to disscuss other things.
March 26, 2012 More background work. The "middle world" part of the background is taking form.
March 25 The end is in sight. I modeled Black Elk's left hand and am starting to add the world tree background with the lower, middle and upper worlds.
March 23, 2012 More work to get a natural look to the "ill fitting" clothing.
March 20, 2012 Alot accomplished now that I am on the Easter break from Grad School. I will be working on the "tree" background to seperate the 3 worlds soon. I hope to finish this work this week.
March 17, 2012 More work on the sleaves. They are starting to look the way I want.
March 5, 2012 Working on the uniform, especialy the smock and the wrinkles in the sleaves. This requires contrasting, blue, light blue, black, and white paper. I also corected the width of the middle chest which was made too narrow, in error. Compare with previous photo.
February 28, 2012 Face about done, the rest of the work is taking shape.
February 26, 2012 Making progress on the face of Black Elk. What looks like a hdge podge of colored paper will take form as the contours of the face. Smithsonian magazene is the main source of paper.
February 22, 2012, I have created another 8"x10" collage for my small works series to add some variety to my shows. This one is of a red eared slider. I am pushing on with my large portrait of Black Elk, now transfered to canvis and with its first added magazine shreds.
February 10, 2012 here, I have created a small landscape, using shreds from Landscape Architecture magazine, to add variety to upcomming shows. it is 8x10 inches. I am creating another while continuing my work on the Black Elk collage. I am in the process of transfering my Black Elk sketch, from the last post, onto its 40x30 inch canves.
January 27, 2012 Nearing completion of my sketch, I will transfer it to a 30 x40 inch canvis to begin the collage. Progress will be slow as the grad school semester haqs started and engineering studies will dominate my time. Still, check in for progress from time to time.
January 22, 2012 Here, I am creating my sketch, or "cartoon" for my Black Elk collage.
January 16, 2012 Finished and titled "Notre Dame". A collage of Black Elk is the next project.
January 13, 2012 Starting the background. It will feature colors and objects associated with Stanford and Notre Dame universities.
January 10, 2012 More done, the face is improved, likeness wise and the smile a little better.
January 8, 2012 More progress on Condoleeza's face and hair. I need to make her lower cheek a little wider.
January 1, 2012 Here is a second wildlife collage. I will probibly do a series of these small wildlife collages on recomendation of my expert mentor, artist LeeAnn Brook who purchased the first one.
December 29, 2011 My Fish collage has received such praise. It has already been sold. I will immediately create another small wildlife collage to add to my show at the Flour Garden in Nevada City CA which will run through January, 2012.
December 23, 2011 Here is an improvment on a past work which will stand as the final version. I decided the background was too busy.
December 22, 2011 Nearly done. The fish doesn't look quite right, or stand out from the background enough. I will find the flaw.
December 20, 2011 More progress, will be ready to recive its surface varnish soon.
December 17, 2011 Away, finishing my semester studies in Grad School, I am back at my art. I am putting my Rice on the backburner for a bit to solve some collage technical problems. To do this I am creating a small 4x7 inch collage on canvas of a fish to experiment with new glues and finishes. Below is the start.
November 28, 2011 I created a sketch of Condoleezza which photocopied and am drawing a grid on. I will then scale the drawing to a piece of illistration board.
November 24, 2011
Finished, I am now starting a collage of Condoleezza Rice
November 21, 2011 I am deciding just where to finish this-it still has too much white blank space but I am on the right track in adding more to the bottom left quadrant.
November 16, 2011
Some of my collages are at Java Johns, 306 Broad Street, Nevada City, CA (530) 265-3653, until the end of the month. One new work, not shown in public. The rest have been shown in the Nevada City area before.
November 15, 2011 I am working on the hardest part, the conclusion. I am adding alot of background material to the lest side of the work.
November 13, 2011 Almost done with the collag
November 6, 2011 More progress-The computer needs work. It looks like its been in a house fire! Hopefuly, more black and blue paper will change things.
November 4, 2011 Notebook almost done. I need to work on the keys to make them look less muddled. Jobs' smile looks better. Not to much left to go.
October 31, 2011 The notbook is nearing completion. I have continued to alter the face to induce a warmer smile on Jobs.
October 30, 2011 The notebook and face will be done soon. I am giving some thought to the specific background content.
October 26, 2011 More of the notebook and the rose colored in as well as Jobs' face.
October 15, 2011. Here is my cartoon for the Steve Jobs tribute collage. I will transfer this small drawing I made, to a 30"by 30" canves by photocopying it and drawing a gris over it.
October 10, 2011 Finished. I will keep my work called Mountebank on the back burner while I create a small Steve Jobs tribute collage.
October 7, 2011 Lots of background work as well as improvments in the face. It still needs improvment to be a good likeness. The closeup shows how I am treating the hair as many thin paper cut ribbons.
October 5, 2011
In December, my collage art will be shown in the banquet room of Evan's Kitchen and Catering 855 57th Street, Sacramento, CA. This is in River Park and across the street from California State University Sacramento
October 2, 2011 More work on the Southern Cal Gal collage. Note my new aproach to sky depiction. This is suited to large works without having to glue down large solid pieces of blue paper. I need to work on the face more to get a better likeness of the subject.
October 1, 2011 Here is my October show at the Briar Patch in Grass Valley CA. Wonderful lighting and venue!
September 25, 2011 More work on the face. Cross-eyed look gone. Getting better but more work to go.
September 17, 2011 More work on the hair and a little on the background.
Compare with a similar work in the portfolio. This is intended to ba a larger version of the same work.
September 13, 2011
I am working fast and furious on this one.
September 12, 2011. I have backburnered my work called Mountebank to create a work called "Southern Cal Gal". This is a close repeat of a work I created as a custom portrait some months ago but in a larger format, on canvas, with some changes. Here is the work in progress.
September 9, 2011 This was a great reception! I got lots of encouragement from visitors, staff, and artists, including world renowned artist Erik Decetis. Sat, I will be there again for the 2nd Sat art walk.
Sept 4, 2011 In April 2012, a larger number of my collages, more than are being featured this month, will be shown at the J27 Gallery, 2728c J Street Sacramento, CA. This will be a shared show with an excellant"recycled materials artist".
September 4, 2011 On the September 10th , Second Saturday Artwalk 6pm to 10pm, I will be at the J27 Gallery, in Sacramento CA where 2 of my works are being shown, along with other artists. I will be at the artist reception this coming Thursday, 6-9PM It would be exciting to see some friends there! There will be alot of great artists there.
Today, my reception at St. Marks art gallery in Sacramento CA was excellant. With many visitors asking detailed questions about my work and buying prints.
August 13, 2011 Here is a closeup of the Mountebank, the main figure in the composition. I am casting him as a blond with a glamerous '70's haircut, suntan and snow white teeth. This is the stereotype of the modern Montebank.
August 12, 2011
My collage portrait show is up at St. Marks Art Gallery, St. Marks United Methodist Church, 2391 Saint Marks Way, Sacramento, CA (916) 483-7848 in Sacramento CA. I will be there for the reception this Sunday, from 10:30AM 'til 1PM. The gallery is open for these hours every Sunday. Some of my collage art is now in the Latitudes, downstairs Bistro, in Auburn, at 130 Maple St # 200, Auburn, CA (530) 885-9535 and was featured in the art walk on Thursday, August 11, from 6-9PM. The work will be there for 2 months.
I was be present, at the Bistro, during the artwalk.
July 29, 2011
Finaly, first paper on my next work, Mountebank. This is a big project. I will start one or two smaller collages to work on at the same time.
July 16, 2011
Below part of my Borders show. I am laying out the composition for the Mountebank collage on the canvis and will begin adding paper in the next day or two.
July 11, 2011 Much of my collage work is now on display at the Borders Books on Douglas in Roseville CA. It will be there untill the end of the month.
July 10, 2011 My next work will be titled Mountebank and depicts a charletan, his wagon, and a captive audiance in the foreground. Here is an 8"x11" model that I am making up for the collage, which will be about 40"x50" on canvas.
July 4th, 2011 I hosted a hand on collage making activity at the July 4 event in River Park today. I had a great time doing this and met many great people as well as some talented kids. Here is a photo of two girls making collages from magazine shreds that I provided.
July 3, 2011 I finished the work. Since it is canvas, I need to paper the edges since I am not framing it. I will finish the edges with a red, blue, and white stars theme.
June 27, 2011 More work on the background. The plan is to have desert fade to burning civlization fading to a smoke filled sky. I see I need to tone down the "vertical line" in front of the fireman and touching the ax handle at the bottom.
June 17, 2011 Here is a studio shot. The collage is commming out the way I want, complex background and all.
June 14, 2011 More of the "chaotic" background of the work is created. It will make sense when it is done. I am trying to depict the world in chaos on a 3 by 4 foot surface.
June 10, 2011 The background to the left of the fireman is in progress. It is a depiction of a burning world.
June 7, 2011 Here is a closeup. We have got frizzy white hair. Soon I will get started on the background.
May 25, 2011
Finally, the 1st paper is added to the sleeve of the fireman’s coat.
May 24, 2011 Here is the canves with my fireman image laid out. I have a test piece of paper glued to the canves that is visable on the left. The canves seems to take the paper without blistering as well as the illistration board. I was afraid it would blister if the canves was vibrated or "dented" but this doesn't happen. I am adding a coat or two of gesso which, each take 24 hours to dry.
May 8, 2011 My next collage will begin in 2 weeks after my graduate school ends. Upcomming exams in both analysis and advanced thermodynamics have me occupied. The Green Life event at the Nevada County Fair Grounds in Grass Valley, CA is late this month and some of my collage art will be on display and for sale there. The details are at www.greenlifeecofest.org

April 30, 2011, some final detail to the face and forground and it is done. Time to start the next project which will be a modern rendition of Uncle Sam. Stay tuned!
April 28,2011 I sharpended up the likeness in the face and toned down the angry expression. More grass added to the forground.
April 15, 2011 More of the same as last night, weeds and murky water. Alot more weeds to go.
April 11, 2011, changes in my "shows

Here is the start of my hair. In this one, I have more of it. This is probibly all I will need for a self portrait in 5 years! The first background item is added behind my head. This is a clue as to why I am titling this work "99 weeks".
March 19, 2011 A little more work despite being slammed with other duties and suffering more storm power failures. I have eyes and a mouth now. My premature wrinkling will give me a field day with the bags and wrinkles under my eyes. They will be created with lots of thin pieces of grey paper against the white print background.
March 10, 2011 Some of my collage art is now on display at the Starbucks at 2604 J Street, Sacramento, CA (916) 448-5841. This is the Starbucks on J an 26th. It is cool to be in the middle of one of Sacramento's art hubs. It will be there until month's end.
More progress on the face. The thing in the middle will look like a nose when all of the paper is in place.
March 6, 2011 Starting to add the magazine paper. Starting with the eye-nose area helps fix the likeness. I see I will want to tone down the scowling expression some, though it fits the composition as you will see. A contrast between fine print and regular is being used to delineate the area covered by the wire frame glasses.
February 28, 2011 I could draw the image again on the illistration board that will hold the collage, but why draw it twice? I am using a grid to transfer the image to the board. This is an old trick that the Renaissance artists used.
February 26, 2011 There are major power failures throughout our area and I don't know when I will continue this collage. It will be as soon as possable. Check back often!
My self portrait sketch is finished and ready to transfer to illistration board for the collage process. I have to decide whether to use the light sketch or the one with more pronounced shadows. I will create the collage from "Mechanical Engineering" magazines. The odd metal item at the upper left corner is a draftsmans erasing shield, usefull for erasing a tiny area o the sketch. The shaving mirror I used to sketch myself is in the lower left of the picture.
My next collage portrait will be titled "99 Days" I am using my own self portrait as the subject, and here, I am sketching my face from a view in a small shaving mirror.
